After learning to dive in the 1950s while studying marine biology in Florida, Sylvia went on to set deep sea diving records, become the first female Chief Scientist of NOAA, lead more than 100 expeditions, and enjoy more than 7,000 hours beneath the surface. She is truly an ocean icon! So much so that she is called ‘Her Deepness’ by The New Yorker and The New York Times, ‘Living Legend’ by the Library of Congress, and ‘Hero for the Planet’ by Time Magazine.
